Writer Megan Walrod shares how life shaped her into the woman who could finish her novel—and why great work starts with trusting your process and your purpose.
I am trying to be the person I want to be too. But I think it's not so much about gaining the knowledge you need to be exactly that person, instead it's having the mindset and the discipline to retrain your brain so you can embody that person fully. The knowledge will come along and be gained.
For me it’s about the lived experience. It’s funny how my protagonist’s journey mirrors mine and vise versa. It’s not intentional, but I notice it happening. Sometimes I have to live through what she’s going through to write a good scene.
Cheers to is for noticing, and embracing, these things!
Hi you! I loved seeing your takeaways from this interview. The whole becoming thing… I resonate with what you shared. For me there was definitely an untaming and unlearning that was going on… There was also surrendering to the mystery! It’s not like I said, “I’m gonna fall off a horse now so that I can have the experience I need to finish my novel!” And for me that’s been one of the biggest lessons… surrendering to the creative process and instead of forcing some becoming… Allowing it. Letting myself be surprised by the unfolding. 🙏
“It’s not your job to know the how or the when. Your job is to say yes - yes to the dream, the desire, the Big Magic that’s knocking on your door.” So good!!
Isn’t it amazing when we do say yes to our gifts… And finally acknowledge for ourselves who and what we are and what we’re capable of?! And my total pleasure with sharing my story. I was so happy when Marta invited me too. Write on! (I know, totally cheesy… But it’s just too fun not to!)
I feel like as I enter my 5th decade that I am becoming something a little different - better, but I am still exploring her. It is an exciting time. This post made me think a little deeper on it.
I’m so glad it inspired you to go deeper. I’m entering my 6th decade, but ten years ago I also experienced a different but better shift. All through my 50s, actually. It feels like I’m settling into a new me.
Lovely short profile of Megan with the nain points that I took away:
Become the person you need to be to reach your dreams.
Trust the timing, and the experiences you had that formed you.
You may not know how, but if you keep focus on the vision of the impact you want to make in the world and they will vome and benefit from that.
Perfect message!
Zara, all great takeaways! I'm learning the first one at the moment. =)

I love that mindset shift!

I so get that! It’s quite a ride, sometimes, isn’t it? To have our characters as both a mirror and muse!

Such awesome takeaways!
Great story. Trusting ourselves is such a lesson to learn!
Right? Why is that even a lesson?
Thank you! And yes… Trusting ourselves is everything. And definitely requires a lot of unlearning the self-doubt that we were taught!
That line about saying "yes" gave me chills. Amen!

I love that the bit about saying yes gave you chills! Is there a dream that you’ve been saying yes to… or that’s asking you to say yes? ✨
Definitely - being a writer. I always have been but it took a while to accept! Thank you for sharing your story!

Life’s unexpected twists can make us who we are and make our lives way more interesting…
Yes! Those twists may not feel great in the moment, but they can enrich our lives if we let them.
